What’s the best way to get melted candles out of votive cups?

The candles completely melted and are now formed to the inside of the cups. I thought about microwaving them but I have visions of a big mess in my microwave. I’m also concerned about the little metal things around the wicks of the candles. Any ideas or are they junk now?

Is it allowable to use candles in connection with prayer?
