I was able to attend a synagogue but my parents are now being unreasonable, and refuse to provide transportation. Now I watch online services at “www.myjewishcommunity.org.” Now I just want a way to celebrate the Shabbat with out the hassle of having to light candles…

  1. Candles? Such bondage.

Why not rather follow the Scriptures?

If God looks at the heart He surely does not need candles to see what is there?

  2. Depends on your situation- check out sellmeyourjewishsoul.com and I’d suggest contacting eliyokum

  3. Shabbat is a lot, lot more than candles. I just wrote a nice long answer with ideas.

However, I see you are considering messanic “judaism.” You know it’s a form of Christianity & nothign more. The name is used as manipulation to harm Judaism itself. So I have no problem with you adopting a version of Christianity that uses some Jewish rituals if used with Jewish meanings….

I can’t support a group that’s harmful to Judasim. That’s about replacement theology & very old intolerances of forcing Christian beliefs onto Jews. While footsoldiers often don’t realize this, that is the formation & goal of the group.

So, if you are willing to not call it falsely Judasim or yourself falsely a Jew, I’m happy to help. Till I understand your views more I’ve removed my other comment. It’s not like Christianity with it’s sects, these groups are claiming Jews are intolerant for refusing their fundamentalist Christianity as a version of Judaism. Same complaint essentially Jews ahve been hassled with & killed for, for centuries.

Good luck with your spritual search. I hope this helps too.

PS I only read one question/answer of yours & now I’m confused about your views. Let me know (my email is open). I don’t want to be commenting with concern about messanics to you, if that’s not where your going with this!

    ==================
“Hi what’s your name?” – his past questions were about Messanics & JC. Candles are symbolic & replacement of what used to be in the Temple & so they are important. However, read the answers again – no one said he had to light them out of commandments.

  4. If you consider lighting candles to be a hassle, you probably should rethink this whole playing at Judaism thing.

  5. Why are candles a hassle? If lighting candles is a hassel because they are boring to you and you are Christian (evidence by your questions on your profile about joining Messianic Christianity), then you are in no way obligated to do the Judaism thing, (Angels we are thinking alike again) including candles, at all.

Messianic Christianity is Evangelical, Christianity supported by what was traditionally known as the “fundamentalist” branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Their efforts to pretend to be Jewish to lure people into their churches is condemned by many branches of Christianity and obviously Judaism. If that is the kind of synagogue you are trying to go to, then your parents are exactly right!

Candles are wonderful and set the mood. They are also symbolic with deep meaning I’m not going to go into because you didn’t ask that.

Guys are obligated to light them if there is not a woman around, but I know sometimes they don’t.

If you are sincerely seeking G-d and interested in Judaism, and candle lighting is a hassle because you are eating with your parents and can’t, then here is an idea:

You can get little tea lights that look almost real. I saw them in the grocery store 8 or so for $3.00 and extra batteries for almost nothing. It’s not optimal, but if you are unable to light candles because of the fire issue, or don’t want to make a big deal in front of your family, that is an option. Just click the little plastic switch and you have candles in your room. You only need 2, and they don’t need glass votives or anything. They’re fine by themselves and look like nightlights.

I have heard that for people in hospitals or hotels or places where they cannot light candles, it is ok to get those electric or battery powered candles.

On the other hand, messianics don’t have to light candles because they’re not Jews.

The whole Shabbat table brings the Temple and the Shekinah into our homes. The Table is the new altar. Candles are part of that.

  6. You people do not know what you are talking about, this user said NOTHING about Messianic Judaism…And no you don’t have to light candles for the shabbat, out of the 613 laws in the Torah, it says nothing about Having to light candles for the Shabbat…
