What’s the best way to get melted candles out of votive cups?
The candles completely melted and are now formed to the inside of the cups. I thought about microwaving them but I have visions of a big mess in my microwave. I’m also concerned about the little metal things around the wicks of the candles. Any ideas or are they junk now?

Get some HOT water in a plastic container. Boil some water, put it in an old plastic container. Toss the votives in it and wait for the wax to melt. Take each out and wipe clean with a paper towel. After you clean them all….toss the water outside! Don’t put it down a drain because the wax will possibly plug the drain. Then throw away the container.
Boil the cups.
Put the cups in a pan you don’t use for food. Start with cool water and bring the water to a boil with the cups already in it. (Don’t just drop the cups into boiling water or they will break.)
The wax will boil right out of the cups.
pour boiling water in the cups, or a pot of coffee(with no coffee of course, just the hot water) into each votive. Let sit for about a minute, empty the water and the wax will easily come out with a butter knife. You can then boil the whole lot (in an old pot!) to get off any extra residue. I used to work in a restaurant with votives on the tables and we had to do this often.
I usually stick them in the freezer; as they freeze they contract and you can pop them out with a table knife or screwdriver.
you can put them in the freezer for an hour
i put mine in the freezer for a few minutes then the wax pops right.
Well, I have done it in the microwave, but if there is a medal thingy in the wax, it causes an arc. So, I don’t recommend it. Perhaps setting the holder in a pan of hot water would loosen it enough to get the old wax out. Good luck.
Yup….the freezer is your best bet PK….it works like a charm!!
I have used the hot water and the freezer. They both work. I like the freezer better because there is less mess but it takes longer.
Good luck
